Men's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 2-17-10

1. Kentucky Wesleyan 26-3 +1 Kentucky will end its very successful season with a game against Bellarmine. The Panthers have to be feeling good after defeating former No. 1 Southern Indiana
2. Southern Indiana 23-1 -1 The Eagles will look to bounce back on the road after a devastating loss against Kentucky Wesleyan. They face off against Northern Kentucky on Thursday.
3. Drury 21-5 +1 Drury has its last scheduled game against Rockhurst on Thursday. With the success that the Panthers have found, they can look forward to cap the season with a winning streak.
4. Quincy 20-5 -1 Quincy will end the 2 game series against Lewis on Saturday, and since the Hawks have snapped their undefeated streak, they have gone 4-5. Lewis will prove tough for Quincy.
5. Findlay 17-6 +2 Findlay should have an easy week. They play Michigan Tech followed by Northern Michigan.
6. Grand Valley 17-6 -1 Grand Valley had two losses against the teams that should be easy wins for Findlay this week. The Lakers face off against Saginaw Valley and Lake Superior State, and need to turn their game around for wins.
7. Bellarmine 18-7 -1 Bellarmine finishes its season with the two toughest games back to back. They have to make it through Kentucky Wesleyan, then face South Indy on Saturday, which is the Knights’ Homecoming.
8. Rockhurst 16-9 NC Rockhurst finishes the season with a tough game against Drury, followed by some slack against Missouri S&T on Saturday, which is the Hawk’s Senior Day.
9. St. Joseph’s 16-9 +3 St. Joseph’s comes off of big wins against Quincy and Lewis, and looks to keep the streak alive with its last two opponents: UW-Parkside and Central State
10. Lewis 15-10 -1 Lewis has two games remaining. The game on Thursday against Illinois-Springfield should be a guaranteed win for the Flyers, and the real challenge will come on Saturday against Quincy, but based on Quincy’s decline in performance, Lewis could take that one too.
11. Saginaw Valley 14-9 -1 The Cardinals had an unfortunate loss against Ashland last week, but if they come out with wins against Ferris State and Grand Valley this week, they can get some high rankings next week.
12. Ferris State 14-9 -1 Ferris State has a tough week against them as they face off against Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley this week. The win from Northern Michigan will need to carry over into this week.
13. Northern Kentucky 13-12 NC Northern Kentucky could split the last two games of the season against South Indy, which is almost promised to be a loss, and Indianapolis. However, if we see the intensity that the Norse had against Drury in the upset, Northern Kentucky could take both games.
14. Ashland 12-11 +5 Ashland will face Wayne State after two big wins against Saginaw Valley and Lake Superior State.
15. Hillsdale 10-12 +6 The Chargers play Northern Michigan on Thursday, but the interesting game will be on Saturday, as Hillsdale looks to take a win against Michigan Tech, who won the last contest.
16. Lake Superior State 12-11 -2 The Lakers come off two losses that should have never happened against last ranked Tiffin and Ashland. If they continue to play like they have, they can expect losses against Grand Valley and Ferris State this week.
17. Indianapolis 12-14 -2 Indianapolis has one game left against Northern Kentucky on Saturday. They will try to end the four game losing streak and the season with a win.
18. Northwood 11-11 NC Northwood’s last 3 wins are against Findlay, Lake Superior, and Saginaw Valley. This week they look to add more wins against Tiffin and Ashland, which will be a game of revenge.
19. Wayne State 10-12 -3 After three tough losses, the Warriors look to have an easier schedule this week against Ashland and Tiffin. Although Ashland is ranked higher, Wayne State won the last meeting between the two.
20. Central State 18-5 -4 Central State will begin a 2 game series against the University of DC on Saturday, then come home for a game against the tough St. Joseph’s on Monday.
21. Northern Michigan 10-12 +2 The Wildcats have an extremely difficult week ahead of them. They will compete against Hillsdale, followed by Findlay. They will need to play like they did against Grand Valley to come out with wins.
22. Missouri- St. Louis 10-15 -2 Missouri-St. Louis will face off again against Missouri S&T, followed by the season closer against Maryville. The last time these two teams met, the scoreboard really went to high numbers. Scoring 152 points again would be a great way to end the season.
23. Illinois-Springfield 10-12 -1 The Prairie Stars have two teams left in the season, both of which lost to Illinois-Springfield in the last matchups. UIS will hope to beat Lewis and cap the season with a victory against UW-Parkside.
24. Lake Erie College 10-15 NC Lake Erie will try to end their season with two wins against Ohio Dominican and Indiana this Saturday and Monday.
25. Michigan Tech 8-15 +2 The Huskies have the same schedule as Northern Michigan, but in reverse order. Since Tech has been undefeated in the month of February, this week will be an interesting one to watch.
26. UW-Parkside 8-17 -1 UW-Parkside finishes with tough St. Joseph followed by Illinois-Springfield. The last two games look to prove tough for the Rangers.
27. Missouri S&T 7-18 -1 The Miners have an unfortunate end to their season, looking at potential losses against Missouri St. Louis and Rockhurst.
28. Maryville 3-23 NC The Saints are marching into Missouri-St. Louis’s court on Saturday, and will most likely leave the court and the season with yet another loss.
29. Tiffin 2-21 NC Tiffin came out of last week with its first conference win against Lake Superior State. The Dragons will try to do the same thing against Northwood and Wayne State this week.

Women's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 2-17-10

1. Michigan Tech 22-1 +1 The Huskies regain the top spot, maybe for good, and have clinched a home playoff game in the lopsided GLIAC.
2. Indianapolis 24-2 -1 UIndy lost both their games, one on the road, one on a last second shot, against teams that could face the Greyhounds come tournament time.
3. Drury 22-6 NC Drury has coasted into the tournament with a pretty easy schedule, including their final game against Rockhurst
4. Northern Kentucky 19-6 +3 The Norse have won ten straight behind Casse Mogan putting up 17 points per game.
5. Wisconsin-Parkside 19-6 -1 The Rangers are only 2-2 in their last four games.
6. Northern Michigan 17-6 -1 The Wildcats can solidify their playoff bid with a big road win against the Oilers.
7. Southern Indiana 19-7 +2 The Screaming Eagles climbed back into the top 8 by handing the Greyhounds their first loss.
8. Grand Valley 16-5 NC At this point in the season, a split in the UP isn’t good enough to move the Lakers up.
9. Findlay 17-6 -3 The Oilers are starting out slower than they have all year, setting up an interesting matchup against NMU who’s having similar problems.
10. Quincy 19-6 +2 The Hawks grabbed the win against UWP, but playoff seeding is on the line tomorrow against Lewis.
11. Lake Erie 17-9 -1 A school record winning streak was snapped by a 89-87 loss to Ohio Dominican.
12. Bellarmine 15-10 +1 The Knights are now at .500 in GLVC play after the thrilling win over UIndy, but the Knights have to pull off at least one road win to end the season at that mark.
13. Lewis 14-11 -2 The Flyers will have to turn around their low rebounding streak and attack the boards against Southern Indiana and Quincy to go into the tournament strong.
14. Hillsdale 11-11 +1 The Chargers are a tough team to beat when their 3 point shooting is strong, and will need that in their final home games of the year against NMU and Tech.
15. Lake Superior State 12-10 +1 The Lakers have been biding their time as the forgotten team of the GLIAC North, but need to start peaking to have a chance in the conference tournament.
16. Ashland 12-11 +1 The Eagles will need some help to get back into the higher seeds, but with their schedule ending at Hillsdale and Findlay, they can still shake up the GLIAC South.
17. Missouri S&T 13-12 +1 The Miners are playing the perfect trap game against St. Louis before ending their season at Rockhurst.
18. Kentucky Wesleyan 12-14 -4 The Panthers are a measly 5-12 in conference play, including the 2-7 streak they’re on now.
19. Northwood 11-11 NC The T’wolves will play some middle of the road teams before ending the season at Grand Valley.
20. Central State 9-13 +1 The Marauders defeated Kentucky State for the second time this season behind Brooklyn Morrow, the team’s leading scorer with 13.2 ppg.
21. Missouri St. Louis 10-15 -1 Cat Chat’s one-time pick to be a GLVC Cinderella has fizzled lately with a four game losing streak.
22. Rockhurst 8-17 +3 The Hawks first conference winning streak will be demolished by #3 Drury
23. Wayne State 7-16 +1 The Warriors are the ninth ranked team in the GLIAC, but can move up with some help and winning at least three of their last four.
24. Ferris State 6-17 -3 The Bulldogs have shown some spunk in their last four games against quality opponents, but it is just too little too late.
25. Tiffin 6-17 -2 The Dragons are on a five game losing streak and have a real possibility to go the rest of the season without a win.
26. St. Joseph 8-18 +1 The Pumas scored a huge win against Lewis and an expected win against the lowly Prairie Stars, but will need a miracle for their season finale against UWP.
27. Saginaw Valley 5-18 -1 The Cardinals have one more winnable game (home vs. Ferris State) before a road trip to the UP to end the season.
28. *Maryville 5-17 NC At least the Saints have a fighting chance to end their season on a win at UMSL.

Men's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 2-3-10

1. *Southern Indiana 19-0 NC Southern Indiana continues to be unstoppable on the court. Win number 20 will no doubt come Missouri- St. Louis on Thursday.
2. Kentucky Wesleyan 21-3 NC Kentucky Wesleyan proved that it deserves a rank this high with its win against former number one ranked Quincy. With Maryville next on the list, it looks to be nothing but positive outcomes for KWC.
3. Drury 17-3 +1 Drury ranks number two in scoring offense in the GLVC, and will prove how powerful they are against a lower ranked Northern Kentucky.
4. Quincy 17-3 -1 Quincy, the former number one rank, has gone 2-3 in its last five games. Although some of the previous opponents have proven very tough, a win certainly looks in Quincy’s favor against Illinois-Springfield.
5. Findlay 16-3 NC After taking the highest rank of any of the GLIAC teams, Findlay will look to prove its spot with a win against Grand Valley on Thursday.
6. Grand Valley 15-4 NC Grand Valley was shut down over the weekend with a loss against Northern Michigan. The next game on the schedule is against Findlay, and a win would put Grand Valley back on top in the GLIAC.
7. Bellarmine 14-7 NC Bellarmine comes home after a win in Illinois, and only a five point loss against a tough Quincy team. Playing against a team with a record opposite their own, Bellarmine should pull out a win on Thursday over Missouri- S&T.
8. Rockhurst 14-7 +1 Rockhurst has its next contest on the road against Indianapolis. With the second highest rank in 3 pt defense, Rockhurst can look for another win on the road.
9. St. Joseph’s 13-7 +3 St. Joseph takes a trip to compete against Lewis. St. Joseph is on a 5 game winning streak, and looks to make it win number six on Thursday
10. Saginaw Valley 12-7 -2 Saginaw Valley comes home after two devastating losses, one of which was against a surprising underdog called Hillsdale. If the team can get back into a winning behavior, they can take the victory over Wayne State.
11. Ferris State 12-7 +2 Ferris State faces off against Hillsdale, and both teams have a five game winning streak going into the game. Ferris has what it takes to shut down this unusual funk that Hillsdale has found, but with the surprising wins that Hillsdale has come up with, the result of this game is up in the air.
12. Central State 16-4 NC Central State only lost its last game by one point. With a very good record, a win looks very possible against local rival Wilberforce University.
13. Lewis 12-9 -2 Lewis is on a 3 game losing streak, but the losses come from ranks 1, 2, and 3 on this list. The last week has been tough, and a win against St. Joseph’s can put that week behind Lewis.
14. Lake Superior State 11-8 -2 Lake Superior State is up against Northwood next, and looks to have a win from the game, which will turn around the loss that made Lake State another victim to the Hillsdale winning streak.
15. Wayne State 10-8 +3 Wayne State takes its two game winning streak to Saginaw Valley. Although the wins were from lower ranked teams, Wayne State could keep in the groove and pull out a win against Saginaw.
16. Indianapolis 11-10 -1 With a last ten games record of 4-6, as opposed to Rockhurst’s 7-3 record, it looks as though Indianapolis will make their season a .500 season through Thursday.
17. Northern Kentucky 11-10 NC Northern Kentucky may have the second best scoring defense in the GLVC, but it will take much more to beat Drury in the contest on Thursday.
18. Missouri- St. Louis 10-11 -2 Missouri will have an unfortunate game on Thursday. It will be a safe bet that Southern Indiana isn’t about to give up its first loss to a team ranked much lower, especially if the team is on a six game losing streak. This should be a devastating game for Missouri.
19. Ashland 9-10 +1 Ashland faces off against Northern Michigan next. Both teams have a pretty similar record, and a win from either team will definitely result in advances in the rankings.
20. *Illinois-Springfield 8-10 -1 Illinois-Springfield’s next opponent may have made a significant fall in the rankings, but Quincy still looks to pull the win against a team with record of 1-5 in its last five games.
21. Northern Michigan 8-10 +1 Northern Michigan will compete against Ashland in its next contest in a huge conference bubble game. NMU is also coming off a win at GLIAC North leading GVSU.
22. Northwood 8-10 -1 Northwood faces off against Lake Superior State. In their last match-up, Lake State won 88-72. Northwood will have some vengeance out, but it may not prove to be enough for a victory.
23. Hillsdale 7-11 +1 Hillsdale would never have thought to be a tough opponent to a much higher ranked Ferris State. However, 4 of the past 5 victories have come from higher ranked teams. Hillsdale could actually pull off a win.
24. UW-Parkside 8-14 -1 UW has a bye on Thursday, and then takes the court against Lewis, who holds the spot that is 11 above UW. It will prove challenging to try to get a win out of the game on Saturday
25. Missouri S&T 7-13 NC The last 10 games for Missouri S&T ended with a low 3-7 record. Facing off against No. 7 Bellarmine does not look to improve any record for Missouri S&T.
26. Lake Erie College 7-15 NC After a win against Ohio Dominican, Lake Erie will face off its next game against Central State on Saturday after a bye on Thursday. Lake Erie looks to come out of the contest unsuccessful.
27. Michigan Tech 4-15 NC Michigan Tech faces off against Tiffin in the next game. Tech was the last team to beat Hillsdale, so they deserve some credit, and will most likely seal the win.
28. *Maryville 2-19 NC Kentucky Wesleyan is the next opponent for Maryville. The two teams have completely opposite season records. It is no question that Maryville will got loss number 20 in the game on Thursday.
29. Tiffin 1-18 NC Tiffin will compete next against Michigan Tech. the team has been winless since November. A win against a low ranked Tech could happen, but it doesn’t look probable.

Women's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 2-3-10

1. Indianapolis 21-0 NC With an impressive showing against Wisconsin-Parkside, the Greyhounds are the dominant team of the Midwest.
2. Michigan Tech 18-1 NC The Huskies barely made it out of Allendale with a win, but had a solid showing at struggling Ferris.
3. Wisconsin-Parkside 18-4 NC The showdown of the division leaders saw UWP on the losing side, but the Rangers don’t play a top 10 team for the rest of the regular season.
4. Drury 18-4 +1 The Panthers are the only team shooting over 50% in the region.
5. Northern Michigan 14-5 +1 The Wildcats are #1 in defensive rebounding percentage, a stat which was a problem for Northern in the past.
6. Findlay 15-4 +2 The second ranked shooting defense team in the GLIAC will have a great showdown Thursday night at Grand Valley against their second ranked shooting offense.
7. Southern Indiana 15-6 -3 The perfect cure for a three game losing streak and a 2-4 road trip is two home games against teams with losing records.
8. Northern Kentucky 15-6 +2 The Norse are on a six game win streak, but only Wisconsin-Parkside and Bellarmine have winning records.
9. Lake Erie 16-8 NC With only three games left in their season, the Storm can win out pretty easily.
10. Grand Valley 14-5 -3 A missed free throw was all it took for the Lakers to go 0-2 this weekend as they lost two on the road to GLIAC North foes.
11. Quincy 15-5 NC The Hawks have their next four games against two of the three worst teams in the GLVC before hosting GLVC North leading UWP.
12. Lewis 12-9 NC The Flyers have stepped up big this past weekend with a 13 point win over Kentucky Wesleyan and a nine point win over the Screaming Eagles. Lewis has to be very careful to not be trapped on Thursday against St. Joe’s as they prepare for a home and home against UWP.
13. Bellarmine 12-9 NC The Knights have a three game home stand before heading to Indianapolis.
14. Ashland 11-8 NC The Eagles will try to get the season sweep of NMU on Thursday through their defense, which held the Wildcats scoreless for a stretch of over nine minutes the last time these two teams played.
15. Hillsdale 9-9 NC The Chargers have won their last three games, bringing them up to .500 for the second time this season. Hillsdale will try to get over that hump of mediocrity as they play FSU on Thursday.
16. Missouri S&T 11-9 +2 Despite being just over .500, the Miners are sitting in second place of the GLVC West.
17. Lake Superior State 9-9 -1 The Lakers four game losing streak could end with a home Thursday game against Northwood.
18. Kentucky Wesleyan 10-11 -1 Last week’s loss to Lewis pretty much ended any shot for the Panthers.
19. Missouri-St. Louis 10-11 NC The Tritons can really get people believing in them with a win on the road at Southern Indiana.
20. Northwood 10-8 NC The T’Wolves are now seventh in the GLIAC, setting up for an epic bubble battle at LSSU.
21. Rockhurst 6-14 +2 Rockhurst is the worst 3-pt shooting team in the region and that number will not improve with a road trip to Indianapolis.
22. Central State 7-12 NC The Marauders will face a tough local rival in Wilberforce on Thursday.
23. Tiffin 6-13 +4 The Dragons got their sixth win of the season against Wayne State. A trip to the UP however will prevent them from getting #7.
24. Saginaw Valley 4-15 -1 The Cardinals have been on an abysmal nine game losing streak, however that may end against the Warriors of Wayne State.
25. Ferris State 5-14 NC The Bulldogs have nothing to look forward to this week besides getting pounded by the top two GLIAC South teams.
26. *Maryville 5-15 NC The Hawks will have a lot of work to do as 5 of their last 6 are on the road.
27. Wayne State 4-15 -5 Just when you think the Warriors start to step up, they play like they did in week 1. The game at SVSU though should be a high scoring affair that will be fun for the fans to watch.
28. St. Joseph 5-16 NC The Pumas get an automatic bid to the GLVC championship tournament, as the only team worse than St. Joe’s is in their division. The Pumas might as well start preparing for their opening round foe of Missouri S&T or UMSL.
29. *Illinois Springfield 2-19 NC Oakland City. At home. 19-4 run for the Mighty Oaks to open up the second half. There just isn’t anything you can say after that.

Men's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 1-27-10

1. *Southern Indiana 17-0 +1 Despite the loss of a beloved teammate, Southern Indiana remains undefeated, no doubt to honor his memory. They now have the best scoring offense and defense in the GLVC, and look to keep the winning streak going against UW-Parkside.
2. Kentucky Wesleyan 19-3 +1 Kentucky Wesleyan leads the GLVC in offensive rebounds, and ranks second in a number of categories. The team looks to take the win against Lewis.
3. Quincy 16-2 -2 Quincy leads the GLVC in 3 pt percentage, and in the game against Bellarmine, these shots will help to snap the 2-game losing streak that Quincy has found itself in.
4. Drury 15-3 NC Drury tops the GLVC at the free throw line. If their opponent, Missouri-St Louis keeps them at the line, Drury can count on the win even more.
5. Findlay 14-3 NC Findlay tops the GLIAC in field goal and 3 pt field goal percentage. Easy point scoring will guarantee the win against Lake Superior State.
6. Grand Valley 14-3 NC Grand Valley Leads the GLIAC in scoring defense. The next game against Michigan Tech looks to be a sure win.

8. Saginaw Valley 12-5 +1 Saginaw Valley’s offensive rebounds make them number one in the GLIAC. Offensive rebounds will help secure a victory against Hillsdale
9. Rockhurst 13-7 +1 Rockhurst takes the third spot in the GLVC steals rankings. Steals will be a good way to steal the win from Missouri-St. Louis.
10. Lewis 12-7 -2 In the upcoming game against Kentucky Wesleyan, Lewis has better statistics in defensive rebounds and blocked shots. The defense will have to be strong if Lewis hopes to win the contest.
11. Lake Superior State 11-6 +2 Lake Superior State ranks number one in the GLIAC in assists. Moving the ball around could make the Findlay defense tired, and help get the win.
12. St. Joseph’s 11-7 +2 St. Joseph is in the second place spot in the turnover margin stats. Keeping turnovers to a minimum will be a great way to win against Indianapolis.
13. Ferris State 10-7 +4 Ferris State’s scoring offense and assists are ranked 2nd in the GLIAC. These two aspects of the game will be great tools to defeat Northern Michigan
14. Indianapolis 10-9 -3 Indianapolis could take the win over St. Joseph if they play up to their rank in 3 pt defense, which tops the GLVC.
15. Missouri- St. Louis 10-9 -3 Missouri-St Louis ranks higher in blocked shots than Drury, whom they play next. Blocked shots are going to be essential if the team hopes to get a win.
16. Northern Kentucky 10-9 NC Northern Kentucky is third in the GLVC in blocked shots. Blocking Illinois-Springfield from scoring will help the team be victorious.
17. Wayne State 8-8 -2 Wayne State ranks second in the GLIAC with its turnover margin. Turnovers will a great tool to create the win over Tiffin.
18. *Illinois-Springfield 8-8 +1 Illinois-Springfield has high ranks in a number of rebounding categories, which could help earn the win against Northern Kentucky.
19. Ashland 8-9 -1 Ashland’s offensive rebound percentage, which is third in the GLIAC, could be the deciding factor in the upcoming game against Northwood.
20. Northwood 7-9 +1 Northwood holds the spot of second place in defensive rebounds in the GLIAC. If the team can make good offensive plays off of these rebounds, they can pull off the win over Ashland.

22. UW-Parkside 8-12 NC UW-Parkside does not have statistics on its side for the next game against Southern Indiana. A win here would definitely be against the odds, but could boost the team’s rankings in a number of stats’ categories.
23. Hillsdale 5-11 +2 Hillsdale leads the GLIAC at the free throw line. Sinking these uncontested shots could help the team continue this three game winning streak.
24. Missouri S&T 6-13 +2 Missouri S&T out ranks opposing Maryville in a number of different stats. A win could be in their future if they continue to have the upper hand over Maryville.
25. Lake Erie College 6-14 -1 Lake Erie College does a good job of rallying in the second half. A rally against Ohio Dominican could be all it takes for a win for Lake Erie.
26. Michigan Tech 4-13 -3 Michigan Tech has the highest defensive rebound percentage in the GLIAC. Capitalizing on every rebound could help Tech pull a win out of the game against Grand Valley
27. *Maryville 2-17 NC Maryville currently rests in the number three spot of rebounding offense in the GLVC. Making the best of this kind of offense will be important to win against Missouri S&T.
28. Tiffin 1-16 NC Tiffin’s 3 pt percentage ranks considerably higher than Wayne State, their next opponent. Sinking those shots will be absolutely necessary if Tiffin plans to get another win in their season.

2. Michigan Tech 16-1 NC Husky star Katie Wysocky was named GLIAC North player of the week for the fifth time this season. No other player in the North has been named POTW multiple times.
3. Wisconsin-Parkside 17-3 +1 UWP’s “upset” of overrated Quincy shows that there’s reasons to pay attention in the GLVC North.
4. Southern Indiana 15-4 -1 The 10 point loss to UIndy set them back a spot in the rankings, but sets up the biggest showdown of the region on Thursday in Kenosha, Wisc.
5. Drury 16-4 +1 Have an easier weekend coming up after having to deal with Quincy and Lewis, but could get trapped by UM-St. Louis on Thursday.
6. Northern Michigan 12-5 +1 Had a good run on the Thursday game at LSSU, but need to fix the turnover problems they had at Saginaw Valley.
7. Grand Valley 14-3 +2 Will face their top two opponents in the GLIAC North at home this week: Michigan Tech on Thursday and NMU on Saturday, finally giving us a true view at if they can play a whole weekend against tough opponents.
8. Findlay 13-4 -3 Findlay’s speed can open up a lot of opportunity for the Oilers, but you can’t shoot 37.7% and expect to beat a surging Ashland.
9. Lake Erie 14-8 +3 The Storm is on a six game winning streak going back to the December 30 win against Grand Valley.
10. Northern Kentucky 13-6 +4 NKU is on a four game winning streak of their own as they try to keep pace in the stacked GLVC East.
11. Quincy 13-5 -3 The Eagles have fallen out of the WBCA top 25 for good reasons. Quincy is 4-5 in the GLVC and 0-2 in their conference.
12. Lewis 10-9 -1 The Flyers season will hinge on the Thursday home match up against Kentucky Wesleyan: winner’s season matters, the losers are pretty much out of it.
13. Bellarmine 11-8 -3 What happens when you lose your weekend’s games by an average of 20 points? You plummet in the power rankings.
14. Ashland 10-7 +4 The Eagles have reentered the GLIAC South conversation with a four game winning streak highlighted by last weekend’s defeat of Findlay and Hillsdale.

21. Wayne State 4-13 +3 The Warriors may be the most improved team this season, improving in nearly all stat areas, but won’t be able to beat Ashland this weekend.
22. Saginaw Valley 4-13 +5 The Cardinals had to deal with two contenders this past weekend and stayed strong enough to push the Saturday game into OT.
23. Rockhurst 6-12 -1 A visit from the Prairie Stars are the only thing keeping the Hawks from being on a six game losing streak.
24. Ferris State 5-12 -3 The Bulldogs dead last ranking in the turnover ratio manifested itself in the blown lead against Northwood.

Women's NCAA Midwest Regional Power Rankings 1-21-10

1. University of Indianapolis- The Greyhounds have been perfect so far and winning big with a +25 scoring margin. UIndy should have no big problems until on the road at Wisconsin-Parkside.
2. Michigan Tech- Former #1 is still on top of the GLIAC by squeaking out in OT against Hillsdale and handling the speed of Findlay with ease.
3. Southern Indiana- Screaming Eagles haven’t scored less than 71 points in a win this year, but it’s going to be tough to put up points on the Greyhounds D.
4. Wisconsin-Parkside- The Rangers are very underrated as they have flown under the radar so far this year, but the win against #22 Quincy should expose them as a contender in the region.
5. Findlay- Found out first hand that the Yooper trip to NMU and MTU was a tough challenge from the poor performance of the GLIAC South.
6. Drury- Has done well with out of conference games, including the trip to Hawaii, but haven’t shown anything too spectacular in the GLVC yet.
7. Northern Michigan – The OT lost to Findlay was huge, but a win at dark horse LSSU could help solidify a placement and in the hunt for the competitive GLIAC North title.
8. Quincy- The Hawks are playing big D as they lead the GLVC in blocks, but need to make their shots on the first attempt, as Quincy is only +0.5 rebounds per game.
9. Grand Valley- The Lakers have had only one tough road game all year and that was at Findlay. They haven’t played MTU or NMU, their two biggest GLIAC North opponents.
10. Bellarmine- Scores a lot, but still gives up a lot of points. If they improve their defense, this team can cause some big problems.
11. Lewis- Is very similar to last year’s Wake Forest, except the Flyers have Jenny Turpel instead of Jeff Teague. If you let her do her own thing, but take away the other scorers like Currin, Lewis can be in trouble.
12. Lake Erie- Putting together a good final year as an independent to move up into the GLIAC ranks.
13. Lake Superior State- Has the most potential to move up in the rankings, due to a lot of tough games against GLIAC North opponents.
14. Northern Kentucky- They have some big wins but, those big losses to sub-par GLIAC teams will be almost impossible to overcome.
15. Hillsdale- Is only one game behind the GLIAC South lead, but going 0-4 in non-conference play hurts their postseason chances.
16. Kentucky Wesleyan- Has played pretty good defense overall, but to compete in the league, the scoring has to improve.
17. Missouri S&T- Last week’s losses make the Miners quest for GLVC West title harder.
18. Ashland- With the exception of the upset at home over NMU, the Eagles have beaten who they should beat, and lost to those they should lose to.
19. Northwood- Have solidly improved every week of the season.
20. Ferris State- A lot of picks had the Bulldogs fighting for a home court advantage in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament, but FSU is fighting to hold onto the eighth spot from the increasing threat of Northwood.
21. *Maryville- The Saints are the leaders of that bottom pack of the GLVC as they wait for postseason eligibility.
22. UM- St. Louis- UMSL fights hard every game, as most of their losses are by 7 points or less.
23. Rockhurst- Rockhurst is dead last for the conference in scoring, mainly due to their poor free throw shooting (65%)
24. Tiffin- The Dragons have already shown much improvement since their rookie GLIAC season.
25. St. Joseph’s –All their wins have been against sub-par teams, but have not been close to good teams all season.
26. Wayne State- Finally has been showing the composure necessary to win consistently at this level
27. Saginaw Valley- Are on a 5 game losing streak and 2-9 since starting GLIAC play.
28. *Illinois- Springfield- The Prairie Stars are in the bottom 4 for all stats except offensive rebounding

1. Quincy 16-0 Quincy is the only undefeated team eligible for the NCAA tournament, and the team’s defense is the best eligible defense in its conference. They look to continue their winning streak against Drury.
2. *Southern Indiana 16-0 Despite all the challenges in Evansville, the Screaming Eagles will continue to show their power after their tragic loss.
3. Kentucky Wesleyan 18-2 Kentucky Wesleyan is knocking of the door of the conference leader board, and the game against Northern Kentucky should look to improve their statistics.
4. Drury 13-3 Drury’s offense is rank number one in terms of NCAA tournament eligible teams. The team could has the potential to bring Quincy its first loss.
5. Findlay 12-3 Findlay leads the GLIAC in offense and defense. The team looks to seal the victory in the next three games on its schedule.
6. Grand Valley 12-3 Grand Valley’s defense in the GLIAC has proved successful, and its next two games should be guaranteed wins, but Wayne State, although ranked 15th, has a close defense and slightly better offense, and may prove problematic for GVSU in the future
7. Bellarmine 12-6 Bellarmine faces a team next with a slightly better defense in the GLVC, but since Northern Kentucky’s offense is ranked near the bottom, Bellarmine looks to take the easy win in this matchup.
8. Lewis 11-6 Lewis has a top 5 conference defense, and it should look to improve both its defensive and offensive stats with its next matchup against Missouri S&T
9. Saginaw Valley 10-5 Saginaw Valley’s rebounding offense, which is ranked first in the GLIAC, should guarantee the win in its next contest against Michigan Tech.
10. Rockhurst 11-7 Rockhurst ranks 3rd in the GLVC in steals, which will help the team defeat Illinois-Springfield in the Thursday night game.
11. Indianapolis 10-7 Indianapolis will need its high free throw percentage, as well as its number one conference 3-pt defense if it plans to beat undefeated USI.
12. Missouri- St. Louis 10-7 Missouri-St. Louis’s best stat is their rebounding defense, which is 5th in their conference. The next contest against St. Joseph will be a pretty evenly matched game.
13. Lake Superior State 9-6 Lake Superior State leads the GLIAC in assists. This kind of teamwork should secure the victory against Northern Michigan.

24. Lake Erie College 6-13 Lake Erie narrowly lost a game against Kentucky Wesleyan earlier in the season, 73-75. If they can rally a game like this again, they can look to beat Urbana in Saturday’s game.
25. Hillsdale 3-11 Hillsdale ranks 2nd in the GLIAC in 3-pt field goals made. It will be a question of whether or not this will be enough to win over Ashland.
26. Missouri S&T 5-12 Missouri S&T ranks higher than its next opponent, Lewis, in steals. The team will need to steal the ball often to hope for the win against Lewis.
27. *Maryville 2-15 Maryville is ranked 3rd in rebounding offense in the GLVC. Rebounding, followed by scored baskets, will need to be frequent to hope for a victory against UW-Parkside.
28. Tiffin 1-14 Tiffin outranks Findlay in blocked shots, but will have to pull out a lot more if they plan to beat Findlay in the next contest between the two.

Cat Chat, NMU's television sports show will be holding a meeting on Sunday, January 17 at 7 P.M. in the TV Studio of the McClintock Building. (Head through 125G and the studio is straight ahead.)

Cat Chat is in its second year on the air, and is open to all NMU students. The show airs on WNMU channel 20 in Marquette, Tuesday through Thursday at 9 P.M. as well as on YouTube, and has already built a following of a couple hundred viewers a week online alone.

Students will get a chance to take part in the filming of the show as well as opportunities covering NMU sporting events. Positions include directing, audio mixing, on-air analyst, camera, floor directing, field reporting, interviewing, blogging, live twitter updates from NMU sporting events, creating video packages/feature stories and more.

We are also looking for Sales Management Interns to handle sponsorship deals. Interns will have a chance to get "real world" experience with commercial and web advertising sales. The internships would pay a 25% commission per sponsorship deal.

Cat Chat is also seeking local bands/musicians who would be interested in creating original scores and music for the show. This includes music for highlights, promos, and end credits. It's a great way to be heard.

Cat Chat is a fantastic way to get experience for a resume.

Ski teams win at Tech

In a weekend packed with losses to U.P. rivals, the Wildcat Nordic skiing team brought home the only victories of the weekend at the Michigan Tech Challenge against the host Huskies and UW-Green Bay.
“The skiers raced very well for just getting on snow a few days earlier,” said Coach Jenny Ryan. “Their technique looked good and they skied hard.”
The women won both the classic and freestyle races while the men won the freestyle, but finished second to MTU in the classic. The women were led by junior Christina Gillis who won both 5k races.
“I by no means expected to win both or even one of the races this weekend,” said Gillis. “I am sure as the season continues [the] results will vary. We have a strong squad and the fastest girl can vary day to day.”
The Wildcat women show their strength with five top-10 runners in the freestyle and four in the classic. This highlights the depth of the team, which is important for any racing sport.
Wildcat Laura DeWitt also placed in the top 10 in both races as an open participant. She will be competing for the ‘Cats as she will be a full time student next semester.
The men did not have as much success as the women, as they won the freestyle race on Saturday, but finished second to the host Huskies in the classic on Sunday. The men were led by two newcomers to the team, George Cartwright and Chris Bowler. Cartwright finished third in the 10K freestyle with a time of 30:36.3 and Bowler grabbed the third spot in the classic with a 32:22.6. Senior Tim Cook also finished in the top 10 for both races.
The next action for the Wildcat teams are at the US National Championships, starting January 2 in Anchorage, Alaska.
“The athletes all headed home for a few weeks before departing for
Alaska. They have a training schedule to follow with hard workouts to get used to skiing fast on snow and easy workouts to keep up their fitness,” said Ryan.
The team will leave for Alaska on December 29.

NCAA Division 2 Football Semifinals Preview

SR1 Champion California (PA) VS SR4 Champion Northwest Missouri State by J. Naracon

HOW THEY GOT THERE: California enters semifinal play with an upset victory over West Liberty 57-35, while Northwest Missouri State narrowly won over Central Washington after a blocked extra point sealed their fate, 21-20. Cal suffered three losses in regular season play, all of which were non-conference games. NWMS only lost to Abilene Christian, which they later defeated in round two of the SR4 playoffs.
KEY MATCHUP: It has been said that offense is for scoring points, but defense is for winning games, and the two defenses of this game will definitely decide the victor of this semifinal matchup. Both teams have made their way to the QB for numerous sacks. NWMS outranks Cal with 43 sacks to the Vulcans’ 34. Sean Paddock and Roberto davis have led the Bearcats with 6.5 and 6 sacks respectively. However, The Vulcans have recorded more tackles for a loss than the Bearcats, 95-83. Team leaders in this category for the Vulcans include Thomas Mulabah and Dontey Brown, with 10.5 and 9.5 tackles for loss. While NWMS ranks higher nationally in total defense, Cal shut down the number one offense in the nation with the defeat of West Liberty. With the championship game one win away, both teams will have a tighter defensive strategy than usual, and the matchup will be an exciting one to observe.
PREDICTION: When the victory of a game means a team advances to a championship, you never know what to expect. Both teams will do whatever they can to seal the win. However, after reviewing the playoffs, the Vulcans have not played a team with a worse overall record. They have either had the same, or a worse record than their opponent, yet they have come out of all three games victorious, including the last game’s three-touchdown win over West Liberty, the number one offense in the nation. Although defense will be strong for both teams, California gets the trip to the NCAA Division II Championship, with a final score of 27-24.

SR2 Champions Carson-Newman Eagles vs SR3 Champions Grand Valley State Lakers by Brice Burge

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Eagles pulled off a 24-21 win for their first ever victory at University of North Alabama, a team that was considered by some the favorite to win the championship. Grand Valley also won on the road this weekend at the defending-no-longer Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 24-10 in a game reminiscent to the Colts-Bears Super Bowl a couple of years ago. The Eagles are bringing with them a twelve game winning streak as they have not lost since week 2 at UNA, while the Lakers are running full off revenge victories over UMD and Hillsdale, the last two teams to beat the Lakers (UMD in last year’s SR3 final and Hillsdale in week 7).
KEY MATCHUP: CN ball control offense vs. GVSU front seven. You either live or die by the veer offense style of the Eagles, but with a high tempo offense, you can always spend the time to slow down your attack. If the Eagles can keep the Laker Offense off the field and plow through the front seven early in the game to attack the injury depleted GVSU secondary, CN can win this game very decisively. However the GVSU D-line showed the Bulldogs who was the best team in the Midwest by holding UMD to only 156 yards on the ground with two sacks and helped cause four interceptions.
PREDICTION: The Eagles shocked a lot of people with being able to handle the Lions passing attack and I think they will have one more surprise in them this week: the ability to pass from the pocket. Everybody knows that the secondary from Grand Valley is not as strong as it should be and to attack the secondary while providing the run from the veer option should give a balanced offensive attack, something Grand Valley hasn’t seen most of the year. Carson Newman scores a TD within the final 5 minutes of the game to give the Eagles a 28-27 win.

D2 Superregional Previews 2009

Superregional 1- #1West Liberty vs. #3 California by J. Naracon

HOW THEY GOT THERE- No.3 California comes into the matchup with a slim victory in round two, 26-21 against Shippensburg. The three losses they suffered in the regular season were non conference games. Their opponents, No.1 West Liberty gave up a number of TDs in the second round, but scored a bunch more to take the win, 84-63, and advanced to the quarterfinals.
KEY MATCHUP- This game is going to be a battle of the offense: WLS throwing the ball against California running it down the field. The Hilltoppers are ranked number one in total offense in the nation, mostly because of their passing game averaging 382.18 ypg. The Vulcans will have to fight back on the ground with rushing, which so far has accumulated 2087 yards and 24 touchdowns. More specifically, what to watch for will be California’s rushing leaders: Bacco (629+ yards), Brown (615+ yards), and Portis (383+ yards) against West Liberty’s key players in passing/receiving: Amedro (4580 passing yards), Travis (1055+ receiving yards), and Walls (1176+ receiving yards).
PREDICTION- Along with home field advantage, West Liberty is a team that has players shattering records left and right. Zach Amedro alone has set two records in the WVIAC for passing yards and touchdowns in a season (47). California is a very skilled team as well, but I don’t think they can compare to the Hilltoppers’ offensive drive. I give this game to West Liberty in a blowout victory 52-18.

Super Regional 2- #1 University of North Alabama vs. #2 Carson-Newman by Brice Burge

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Lions were able to double up Arkansas Tech 70-35 at home while the Eagles put away the third Gulf South Conference team of West Alabama. UNA won the GSC this year, losing the final game of the season to UWA while Carson-Newman won the Southern Athletic Conference. These two teams met up earlier in the season with UNA winning 31-14.
KEY MATCHUP: Preston Parker, TJ Porter, and Mico McSwain vs. the Eagle secondary. The top three WR’s for the Lions have been lighting up the scorching DB’s all year, including combining for 255 yards on 21 catches in the week 2 contest of these two teams. Parker and Porter are dealing from recent injuries (Porter receiving a concussion in the regional semifinals) which should help the Eagles who were last in the SAC and ranked 129 in the country. However, it the Eagles can shut down the passing game, the defense can stop the run, as CN gives up only 109.8 yards on the ground a game.
PREDICTION: The biggest key to this game is Time of Possession, because Carson-Newman can keep the highly potent offense of the Lions off the field. The Eagles will avenge their second week loss with some big yards from RB’s Wakefield and Inman and QB Good and win their first playoff game against UNA since 1997. Carson-Newman 30 North Alabama 21

Super Regional 3- #1 University of Minnesota Duluth vs. #2 Grand Valley State University by Brice Burge

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Both teams won big games against quality opponents last week with the Bulldogs whomping RMAC champs Nebraska Kearney 42-7 and the Lakers getting sweet revenge for their one loss of the regular season against the Hillsdale Chargers 44-27. Both teams won their respective conferences with a 10-1 record. These teams are no strangers of each other, as they fought each other in last year’s regional final with the Bulldogs winning 19-13 in 2OT.
KEY MATCHUP: Berezik and Gates vs. the Bulldog front seven. The two tailbacks have been solid for the Lakers as they average 161.2 ypg between the two of them but also allows Harlon Hill candidate Brad Iciek to do a solid job at QB. Last year’s playoff game against the UMD proved that an uncomfortable Iciek can lead to problems. The Lakers have had only two game-clinching fourth quarter drives this year, one at Ferris State and one at home versus Northern Michigan. However in the regional semifinals, the ‘Dogs showed the strength to handle a solid running team in the Lopers on their home turf, holding UNK to only 158 yards.
PREDICTION: It actually looks like Hillsdale will get the last laugh here, as their regular season win over GVSU gave UMD the higher seed. The home field, plus the injury depleted Laker team just cannot hold up to the #1 seed in the Midwest. The Grand Valley Revenge Tour gets derailed by the Repeat Express. 34-24 Minnesota Duluth

Superregional 4- #2 Northwestern Missouri State vs #1Central Washington by J. Naracon

HOW THEY GOT THERE- CWU was given the # 1 seed after an undefeated season. NWM State entered the playoffs with the #2 seed. NWM State’s only regular season loss came during the first week of play from Abilene Christian, which NWM State just defeated in the previous round 35-10. Both NWM State and CWU enter the game with at least a three touchdown win over their previous opponents
KEY MATCHUP- It’s no surprise the test for this game will be the Bearcat’s offense against the Wildcat’s defense. NWM State has been superior in rushing and passing touchdowns, collecting 29 rushing TDs and 39 through the air. On the other hand, CWU’s total defense is ranked second in the nation. They have sacked the quarterback 25 times, and in the previous game against Tarleton State, held the rushing offense to minus 14 yards. Both teams should make this game an interesting one to view.
PREDICTION- The Bearcat’s defense will be a tough matchup for the Wildcat’s offense, despite the previous key matchup. Northwestern ranks higher in a many aspects of the game, so I give this game to them. NWMS 20 CWU 17

Wildcats leave tourney with another first round loss

The Northern Michigan Wildcats fell to the Hillsdale Chargers at the NCAA Regional quarterfinals by a score of 3-2 in a very close match on Thursday, losing in the opening round for the second straight year.
Hillsdale won the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22, but Northern retaliated to win sets three and four 25-17 and 25-21. The last set of the game was by far the closest and most competitive. The lead went back and forth between the two teams, but the Chargers took control after an 11-11 tie to knock down the Wildcats efforts for a comeback, winning the set 15-12. This is the third time this post-season the Chargers have defeated a team they lost to in the regular season. Northern Michigan ends their season with a record of 19-12, while Hillsdale advances to play the University of Indianapolis in the semifinals on Friday.

The GVSU Lakers started out the game strong after winning the first set 25-21, but that would be the only point in the match where they would have the lead. The SVSU Cardinals dominated the last 3 sets of the match 25-15, 25-20, and 25-18, ending Grand Valley’s season with a record of 16-13. The Cardinals advance to play the Lewis Flyers in the semifinals on Friday.

The Lewis Flyers destroyed the Ferris State Bulldogs in the NCAA Regional quarterfinals 3-0 on Thursday, ending Ferris’ season 19-12.
The Flyers took control of the game right from the start and refused to let the Bulldogs take the lead. Ferris made many attempts to overcome Lewis’ domination, but the Flyers kept a tight hold on their lead, winning each set 25-20, 25-27, and 25-21 respectively. This was Ferris’ first appearance at the NCAA regional since 2006. Lewis advances to play SVSU in the semifinals on Friday.

The University of Indianapolis defeated Michigan Tech 3-0 in the NCAA Regional quarterfinals, advancing to play Hillsdale in the NCAA semifinals on Friday.
The UIndy Greyhounds had a 4-point lead for the majority of the game until the last set, when the Huskies had their first lead. Tech came back from being under 6-1 to tie it at 8-8. The set continued back and forth until the Greyhounds had a 4-point run to make it 20-15. UIndy ended up winning all three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-20, ending Michigan Tech’s season with a record of 14-15 and advancing to their 3rd straight NCAA second-round appearance. UIndy defeated Hillsdale in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA’s.

The winner of the UIndy/Hillsdale game will advance to the finals to play the winner of the SVSU/Lewis game on Saturday, November 21.

Cat Chat semis predictions: One more match for only one GLIAC team: the Saginaw Valley Cardinals. SVSU has the depth and position players to defeat the #11 ranked Lewis flyers, and will win it in 4. However GLIAC champion Hillsdale, despite proving themselves in the conference tournament and opening round, will fall to the strongest team in the Midwest in 4.
Cat Chat finals predictions: UIndy 3 SVSU 0. The Greyhounds are just too strong for any GLIAC team this year.

NCAA Football SR3 preview

#1 Minnesota Duluth vs. #4 Nebraska Kearney

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Bulldogs were given the top seed after a 10-1 season and an undefeated Northern Sun schedule. The Lopers are 11-1 after a come from behind victory against SVSU to win their first playoff game in 29 years. Both teams one loss came from non conference opponents: UMD losing to Central Washington (11-0 top seed in SR 4) and UNK losing to Wayne State College (8-3 NSIC). This will be the first matchup between the two teams.

KEY MATCHUP: Loper O vs. Bulldog D- It may sound like a cop out to put one side of the team against the other, but when UNK is putting up 475 ypg for the eighth most yards in the country and the Bulldogs are ranked fourth in total defense giving up only 276 ypg. Seven players for Kearney are on the first or second all RMAC teams and Robbie Aurich, NSIC defensive POTY, leads six players on the first team NSIC North. The overall depth that both these programs have on these respective sides of the ball will be great to watch.

PREDICTION: The awesome O against the dependable D almost always ends up with the defensive team coming up with the win, and usually pretty comfortably. Being the defending NCAA D2 champions on your home turf just continues to spell problems for the Lopers. UMD 35 UNK 17

#2 Grand Valley vs. #6 Hillsdale

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Lakers were given the first round bye after a 10-1 overall record and the GLIAC championship. The Chargers won on a Petro field goal in overtime on the road against MN State-Mankato. GVSU’s only loss came on the road at the Chargers homecoming 27-24, giving GLIAC fans the rematch they’ve been itching for, especially the Hillsdale fans; they’ve already bought out the visiting seating areas and some on the home side as well.

KEY MATCHUP: Panizzi (Hillsdale RB) vs. Grand Valley D-Line – Panizzi is the best power running back in the GLIAC by far. His ability to grind out first downs (Hillsdale is #1 in GLIAC for third down conversion) helps the Chargers dictate their pace. However GVSU leads the GLIAC in sacks and opponents third down conversion.

PREDICTION: Not many teams can come into Allendale and play well, ask Ashland. But this Charger team, led by GLIAC Coach of the Year, Keith Otterbein, will have a strong second half to make this game exciting. Grand Valley 31 Hillsdale 27

Volleyball Wildcats enter NCAA tourney

The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team is headed to the University of Indianapolis this weekend to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. This is the second straight appearance for the Wildcats, as they lost to the UIndy Greyhounds in the opening round last year.

“(We’re) really excited to play at the NCAA Regional Tournament. It was the team’s goal to make it back to the tourney and compete at a higher level,” said NMU head coach Dominic Yoder.

Northern is one of six GLIAC teams, along with Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley, Grand Valley, Ferris State, and Michigan Tech, to advance to the NCAA regional. The other two teams, the top seeded University of Indianapolis Greyhounds and the Lewis Flyers, compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis grabbed the top spot in the regional after a 3-1 victory on Sunday over Lewis in the GLVC Championship, giving the Greyhounds their 21 straight win this season. This will be their third straight NCAA appearance.

The NMU Wildcats, who tied for second place in the GLIAC North with Grand Valley, will be paired up in the quarterfinals against the fifth-seeded Hillsdale Chargers, who are coming off of five straight wins and their first GLIAC Championship Tournament title after beating Saginaw Valley Sunday 3-2. Despite Hillsdale’s tournament title, Hillsdale is seeded below both SVSU and NMU. Of the six GLIAC teams that advanced to the regional, Hillsdale is the only team from the GLIAC South. The GLIAC North had 56 conference wins to only 40 for the South. The Chargers lost to NMU 3-1 in Marquette and went 1-2 in the GLIAC-GLVC crossover tournament last month.

“It will be fun to play (against) Hillsdale again. They have a very competitive team that is playing very well,” said Yoder.

Indianapolis will host the regional, which lasts from Thursday, November 19 through Saturday November 21.The quarterfinals begin at Indianapolis on Thursday at 12pm. The match-ups and times for Thursday’s Quarterfinals are as follows:

The tempo was off, no one was in tune and the words never seemed to line up, but for the members of the football team and marching band, it was the perfect symphony of the bond between the two groups.

After the 41-14 victory over the 4-7 Indianapolis Greyhounds, a group of five players, led by senior running back Mark Bossuah, guided the team across the field. As soon as the band ended their song, a shout rang out from the trumpet section: “BOO!” “SUAH!” responded the rest of the band.

As the band shouted out the team’s top rusher, #21 himself climbed up onto a bench to show his gratitude to his fans.

“Mark's a great guy and very easy to get along with,” said senior trumpet player Marty Fredrick, the creator of the cheer. “I thought it would be good since he's such a prevalent player on the team. Mark also stands out to us quite a bit because he's got such a memorable last name.”

The two Wildcats met each other in their HS 390 class, an upper level history class. The two started talking when Fredrick wished Bossuah good luck before one of the football games. Soon after, the two built a special bond between two different kinds of players and fans.

“Marty would tell me how much he loved football and I would then tell him about how much the music in the band pumped me up,” said Bossuah.

It was once a common practice for the football team to approach the band at some point in the season to sing in appreciation for all of the work the Pride of the North put in throughout the season; however, the last time the singing happened was before 2006.

The special thing about this specific sequence of events is the bridge it creates across certain social barriers. For as long as there have been marching bands and football teams, there have been the cliques that separate the two. For Northern, the uncharacteristic bond is a celebrated difference from the norm.

“If anyone’s school was like mine, the football team and the band didn’t really have any sort of connection or bond,” said Fredrick. “[It was] simply because of cliques and the coolness factor that always is there in high school.”

The Pride of the North is losing 15 seniors this season: Fredrick and his wife Kaylynn, Drum Major Sarah Moulder, Mellophones Jen Boese and Mary Ann Rotter, tenor saxophones Jill Van Landghen and Trista Zdroik, Color Guard Cathy Crane, trombone Ashlee Yziquierdo, clarinet Erin Jones, trumpets Garrett Romero and Katie Miedona, and drumline Steve Boniface, Tyler Clark and Rachael Wilber.

The losses of Marty and Garrett will be especially missed as the two are some of the top hecklers from the band. In addition to the music played at the game, the heckling is another way the band tries to help out the team.

“The heckling started simply as a measure of trying to help the team out by demoralizing the opposing team,” said Fredrick. “[We’re] basically trying to get them to think more about the band rather than the football team.”

As the season ended for both band and team, the respect and bond the two groups had for each other culminated in one magical moment: a group of 200 Wildcat players, singing their best, “for Northern’s glory, for the green and gold.”

Wildcat Updates and Cat Chat’s Super Regional 3 preview

The women's soccer team ended their season in the GLIAC tournament as they won their first ever home postseason game over Findlay (overall record) 2-1. Johnson and Stephens scored for the ‘Cats to get a 2-0 lead, but a desperation setup by the Oilers allowed them to score on Senior Goalie Kara Music. The ‘Cats then lost to the eventual GLIAC champs, Grand Valley, 9-1. Senior Emily Lockery scored the only goal on a penalty kick. The soccer team had 7 seniors: Lockery, Music and fellow keeper Dana Bush, forward Ashley DeKeyser, defenders Joanna Kiilunen, Celia Sturos, and Kaelah Mizzi.

The cross country team ended their season as well last Saturday at the NCAA Midwest regionals, finishing 13^th. Freshman Olivia Juntilla was the first Wildcat to finish with a 23:52. Jenny Wiedmeyer, Bibiane Mahy, Rita Woitas, and Kristin Schulz also scored for the ‘Cats. Grand Valley won the regional scoring only 23 points and Ferris State’s Christine Muir was the individual winner with a 21:34.

The Swimming & Diving team fought a tough rivalry meet against former NMU coach Jon Wilson and his new team in UW-Oshkosh, as the Wildcats fell to the Titans 117-120. The meet came to the very last event, as the 200 Free Relay team of Sawka, Klin, Backman, and Stedman was .18 seconds behind the host team. Super Regional 3 Preview

3 GLIAC teams made the Super Regional 3 playoffs in football, bringing with it some much deserved respect for the conference. Grand Valley (10-1, L31-19 @ GV) gets the bye, while Saginaw Valley (9-2, W23-20 @ SV) is in the fifth seed and Hillsdale (9-2, L35-24 @NMU) gets the sixth and final spot.

#5 SVSU @ #4 Nebraska-Kearney (10-1 RMAC champs). SVSU has the advantage in terms of playoff experience as the Cardinals are 4-5 in the postseason, while the host Lopers are 2-6 all time and 0-4 at home in the playoffs. The home team will want the ball on the ground as the UNK led the RMAC in rushing offense (258.1 ypg) and rushing defense (76.3 ypg). However the rushing D of SVSU is nothing to laugh at either giving up only 88.1 ypg. Winner will play defending D2 champs UM-Duluth.

Key matchup: Dowdell vs UNK secondary: The Indiana State transfer has 11 TD’s and picks this season and is 10^th in the GLIAC for passing efficiency while UNK gave up the least amount of passing TD’s in the RMAC this year. In the last 5 wins for the Cardinals, Dowdell was 53-92-3 with 6 TD’s, but the opponents’ combined overall record was 16-38 with 13 of those wins by Ashland and Findlay. UNK got 14 picks, and gave up 218.1 ypg this season.

Prediction: Saginaw Valley’s only shot to win is with a balanced offense and I just don’t think Dowdell can open up the passing game enough to do this. UNK wins their first home playoff game 17-10.

#6 Hillsdale @ #3 Minnesota State (10-1, NSIC south champs) This is the first home playoff game for the Mavericks, while the Chargers will play their first postseason game since the NAIA playoffs in ’88. MSU was the first seed in the regional until a last week loss at the hands of St. Cloud State sent them to the 3 seed. Hillsdale barely hung onto a playoff spot as their SOS fell like a rock the last weeks of the season, but had the huge win over Grand Valley at their homecoming earlier this season. Turnovers will be the big key for this game as MSU had a +14 TO ratio, but was -3 with 9 fumbles in their loss and 2 overtime games this year. Winner will play Grand Valley in Allendale.

Key Matchup: Hillsdale Passing vs. MSU defense: Troy Weatherhead is probably one of the most underlooked QB’s in the GLIAC with Iciek and Cundiff getting a lot of the fame, but Weatherhead leads in passing yards and is third in efficiency. He also has two of the top WR in the GLIAC with Kegg and Holmes (1&3 in GLIAC with receptions). MSU has given up over 200 ypg in the air this year and has only 9 picks.

Prediction: Hillsdale o-line can handle the Mavericks pressure and when the passing gets old, the power running backs of the Chargers will win it. Hillsdale 27- MSU 14

Baseball may be America’s favorite pastime, but when the leaves change and the temperature falls, football reigns supreme. Nothing compares to tailgate parties and roughing it out in minus 30 degree weather to show your loyalties to you’re favorite NFL or college team. With teams like the Packers and Wolverines in their minds, so many individuals turn their attention away, even to a point that our NMU Wildcats get lost in the mix.

I’m a junior who just transferred this year from Gogebic Community College (which had no football program) and I was very excited to learn that Northern Michigan has a Division II football program. Granted, NMU has mostly D2 programs, but as a fan and former player, I enjoy football because I love the game.

What concerned me was how low some individuals, students and community members alike, thought of the football team. I was a little discouraged when I heard “oh they suck” or “they never were anything”. Despite these remarks, I decided to go to the home-opener against Tiffin to have a look for myself. I believe they have proven the critics wrong! A team that “sucks” couldn’t put up 62 points on their opponent and go on to outscore their opponents 158-68 at home. The Wildcats strong performances against ranked teams such as Wayne State at home and Saginaw Valley State at their homecoming convinced me that these guys are for real.

What surprised and disappointed me the most was the attendance. Did I expect to see crowds like last year’s Miner’s Cup every game? No, but when you’re only drawing a paltry 2,800 fans (double that for homecoming) in an 8,000 seat stadium, there is an issue. There is an issue when the rival team’s fans equal or outnumber the NMU fans or the band is bigger than the student section like on Armed Forces and senior day last year. Even so, there is certainly an issue when there is an “oh they suck” attitude lingering around the Wildcat fan base and the community.

Ferris State, for example, hasn’t always been a dominant team, yet they turn capacity or near-capacity crowds and most of their fans stay loyal through the bad years. That is the tradition that is missing from this school. It takes not only the current students, but the community, alumni, families, etc to make a winning team possible. The players need to know that they are wanted by their fans in order to succeed. In my high school football days, we could be down 30-0 in the third quarter, but just hearing the crowd cheer us on made that score disappear. The 1974 Wildcats went winless, but turned it around for the championship the following year, so it goes to show you that anything is possible.

When you cheer on the Cats, you’re not just supporting the team itself, but you’re supporting the band, the cheerleaders, the former and current Wildcat students and everyone that makes NMU as strong as it is. Though it is true that it has been awhile since we’ve won it all, there is always hope. Before you go and jump on the “oh they suck” bandwagon, just remember, this year could be the year. They can be something, that is, if you help make it happen.

With that being said, let’s make it happen on November 7th against Indianapolis. This game is so important not just because it’s the final game of the season, but for our seniors, it maybe their final game ever. I can’t think of a better way to thank our seniors than to fill the dome with 8,000 screaming fans cheering on a Wildcat victory. Let’s make this game a memorable one. Even if you are not a football fan, do it for your school pride. Together we will make it happen.

Cat Chat will be at the home opener against Tiffin this Saturday. We'll have an interview with NMU President, Les Wong at the game and will be looking to film several promos to air on the show. Look out for the Cat Chat crew at the Fall Kickoff and game and you might just be in one!

There will also be live updates on Twitter from the football game so if you aren't able to attend we've got you covered.

Our first show will air this week so stay tuned for air times.

First Show of the Year to be Taped September 13

We're back for another year and our first taping will be held Sunday, September 13. The show will include highlights of NMU Football's home opener against Tiffin as well as include predictions for the season.

When the the taping is finished the show will be put on YouTube and will also air on WNMU Channel 20 in Marquette. Stay tuned for more updates.

Show Looking for New Members!

Cat Chat, NMU's television sports show will be holding a meeting on Wednesday, August 26 at 5 P.M. in McClintock 125O.

Cat Chat is entering its second year on the air, and is open to all NMU students. The show airs on WNMU channel 20 in Marquette as well as on YouTube.

Students will get a chance to take part in the filming of the show as well as opportunities covering NMU sporting events. Positions include directing, audio mixing, on-air analyst, camera, floor directing, field reporting, interviewing, blogging, creating video packages/feature stories and more.

We are also looking for local bands/musicians who would be interested in creating original scores and music for the show.

This is a great chance to get experience for a resume.

Cats Headed to the Joe!

The NMU hockey team knocked off Miami tonight 3-1 to advance to the Semi Finals of the CCHA Playoffs at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Next up for the Cats will be a match up with Notre Dame.

Crew Members Wanted!

We are looking for crew members to help produce the show. All NMU students are welcome to join.

Positions on the show include being an on-air analyst, directing, audio, floor directing, camera operator, filming at NMU sporting events, voice overs for highlights and packages, interviews, and more.

Meetings will be held on Friday, January 30 at 1 PM in the TV Studio at the McClintock Building, as well as on Monday, February 2 at 6 PM. A taping of the show will follow Monday's meeting.
